I am currently accepting students of all ages and levels into my studio in the Indianapolis/Greenwood/Bloomington areas.

Flute Studio Policies

Lesson Objectives
Our lessons will focus on developing good tone, technique, and musicality through exercises, etudes, and standard flute repertoire. I am passionate about the flute and about passing down the knowledge that I have learned from my teachers, as well as a love for classical music.

Preparedness
Students: Please be properly prepared for lessons. Lessons will be more productive and worthwhile for both of us when you are prepared. Please bring these to each lesson:
-A flute in good, working order
-Notepad to write assignments in
-Pencils
-Tuner and metronome
-Flute lesson books and music
-A week's worth of practice
-A good attitude!

Practice
Practice schedules will vary from student to student. It is advised that parents encourage their child's practice time at home. Practicing is how a student will be able to see progress in their flute playing. Here are some basic practicing expectations for private lessons:
Beginner - The student is required to practice four to five days a week with a minimum of 20-30 minutes each day.
Intermediate - The student is required to practice five to six days a week for 45 minutes-1 hour each day.
Advanced - The student is required to practice six to seven days a week for at least 1-2 hours each day.
I recommend that students keep a practice journal to document their practice sessions. The practice journal benefits both the student and the teacher, as it helps students stay organized and allows the teacher to ensure that students are practicing effectively and efficiently.

How To Practice
For a Beginner: Students should spend 5 minutes playing long tones to develop a good tone. Then, 5 minutes playing assigned scales. Students should then practice etudes, and flute repertoire assigned by the teacher.

For an Intermediate Player: Students are encouraged to begin with a simple tune for 5-10 minutes trying to play it in different keys while focusing on having a good sound and making good phrases. Students should then play assigned scales (Major and Harmonic minor) and exercises (Reichert, Wye) for the next 10-20 minutes. Students should spend the next 10-20 minutes on the assigned etude. Last, students should spend 15-30 minutes on the assigned flute repertoire.

For the Advanced Student: Students are encouraged to begin practicing with a tune, focusing on pitch and sound, and to play it in many different keys (10 minutes). Students should then play different exercises assigned by teacher and finish with either Moyse finger exercises or Practice Book 6(20-40 minutes). Students should spend 10-20 minutes on scales (Major, Harmonic and Melodic Minor, Whole Tone) and Arpeggios (Major, Minor, and Dominant 7ths). Students should continue to practice exercises for tone, and tone color that will be assigned by teacher. Students should then spend 30 minutes on an etude, and 30-45 minutes on flute repertoire assigned by teacher. If able, students should also practice 10 minutes a day on the piccolo.

 Payment Policy
Students may pay for their lesson on the day of the lessons; however, I recommend that students pay for an entire month of lessons at the beginning of each month to encourage commitment. Payments may be made by cash or check. Lesson prices are as follows:
                     30 Minute Lessons - $20
                     45 Minute Lessons - $30
                     60 Minute Lessons - $40
*I am able to travel for lessons but an extra fee of $2-$10 will be charged depending on travel.

Cancellations
If a student is sick or planning on being absent, they must give 24 hour notice prior to the lessons by either email or phone call. If I do not receive notice I will not reschedule the lesson and will expect the lesson to be paid for. If I am absent, I will call you to notify the change in plans and ask to reschedule.

Flute Events
We are extremely lucky to have many great flute events happening in the Indianapolis area. Students are encouraged to participate and perform in as many events and groups as they feel comfortable. I recommend that students audition for honor bands and I can help guide them to a local flute festival or competition.
